Auditions for Ole Olsen Memorial Theater's first production of next season are being held early. Director Debby Mullikin will hold auditions for "A Few Good Men" on Sunday, May 16th at 6 pm at the Peru Depot.
"Holding the auditions several months in advance will get scripts in the actor's hands well before rehearsals that will begin in mid August for minor roles, in late July for major roles.. There are several lead roles in this production and that extra time will help with learning lines and characterization," Mullikin said.
16 men and 10 women are needed for the cast. A few of the roles will be doubled up as jurors in the final courtroom scene. Show dates for "A Few Good Men" are the first two weekends in October. For those familiar with the movie, lead roles include: Daniel Kaffee, Sam Weinberg, Colonel Nathan Jessup, Joanne Galloway, Louden Downey, Harold Dawson, Matthew Markinson, Jack Ross & Jonathon Kendrick. All of these roles have extensive dialogue and are involved in many scenes of the play.
If you've ever wanted to be in Theatre, but was nervous or shy, this is the perfect opportunity for you to get your feet wet as there are several non speaking parts that are perfect for you! And then there are some the minor roles that have 1-2 pages of lines. Mullikin is also searching for Navy and Marine dress uniforms and utilities for the show. "We're hoping to borrow the costumes. So if anyone out there has them, they can contact me by calling the Depot 765-472-3680 or stop by the auditions on May 16th."

"To the Decade Club!" With that toast, a group of
graduating teenagers vow to reunite every ten years. Starting at age
eighteen, the characters take the audience on a journey that spans four
decades of laughter, tears and memories. Like the party with the
"mystery" punch that wasn't so mysterious after all. And what would
growing up be without falling in love? Shy Lizzie has always loved
Steve, and Steve may just love her too, if he can find a way to deal
with his troubled past. But wait! Miss Popularity, Robin, also has a
crush on Steve, and Doug, an easy-going guy, loves Lizzie. Angela Crane,
the class president, would rather be in the Senate than in love. Chris
is happily married. Or so he says. No one's ever seen his wife! By the
time we reach our last reunion, there's a whimsical and heart-warming
matching of souls. While the audience enjoys this funny, tender tour of
growing up, each actor will be challenged by the opportunity to depict
their characters as they mature from the age of 18 to 58. “We’re hoping
to make this show somewhat of a history lesson. The kids will have to
research each decade and will also learn a lot about the aging process.
Our goal is help them gain a new respect for their elders and see what
growing up is really like,” Mullikin said.

Preparations for this year’s Cole Porter Revue, “Radio
Cole” are gaining momentum as the production takes form. Auditions were
held last month, and writer/director Kurt Schindler was impressed with
the turn out. “We had an unprecedented number of young people come out
this year, and the talent level was really impressive. Going in, I was
most concerned about the younger parts, but we actually ended up with
some very difficult choices and disappointing phone calls to make. Our
younger age groups are becoming one of this area’s deepest wells of
talent; they’re very impressive.”
Young Ole veteran Matt Goodman will be making his Cole
Porter debut as Smitty, a young man with a dream of putting on a radio
show. Assisting him as Dylan, his harried playwright friend, will be
Daniel Pearson. Daniel will be making his fifth Cole Porter appearance,
a distinction he will share with Mandee Himes and Barb Cooley.
Also making their Ole Olsen debuts will be Jonathan
Gill and Jesse Salinas playing two morning dj’s, Hannah Olson as a
text-addicted actress, and Kyle Johnson and Erin Herrell as two members
of the Junior Achiever-Nauts, a local accelerated scholars program. The
remaining Junior Achiever-Nauts include two Ole Olsen Children’s Theatre
graduates, Addie Sarver and Daniel Knaupf, and Cole Porter revue veteran
Mykayla Bender, making her third appearance.
These newcomers will be surrounded by an eclectic cast
of former Cole Porter revue veterans. “In many ways, this show is a
tribute to what we’ve accomplished in five short years, and the
incredible repertory of players we’ve built is a big part of that. This
cast definitely represents that, with performers we haven’t seen since
‘A Cole Reception’ and ‘A Cup O’ Cole’ returning to the mix. And as big
as this cast is, I could instantly think of fifteen other incredibly
talented people we would be thrilled to have return.” Performing in
their second Cole Porter this year are Bob Bryan, Carlota Eagley, and
Shanna King. Third year returnees include Jerry Butler, Douglas Harvey,
Pat Piper, Laura Stroud, Cindy Watson, and Ian Watson. And making their
fourth appearances will be Nancy Bender, Jason Gornto, Twanna Jiles,
Emily Perkins, and assistant director Angel Mumaw.
Music director Tom Gustin will also be performing for
a second year, as will Don Smith. The two of them have already begun
arranging music for the ensemble Gustin has assembled for the show.
Besides pianists Cindy Watson and Jason Gornto, Doc Musselman will also
be returning with Ole veterans Dan Roberts and Mike Weller making their
Cole Porter debuts. “The musicians are going to really bring a new
dynamic to the show. And with this group, there’s no way I’m putting
them in a pit. So they’re going to be on stage the whole time, reacting
and participating in the action.”
“Radio Cole” will be performed as part of the Cole
Porter Festival.
